Frequently Asked Questions
Thrive® Culinary Algae Oil is now Heart-Check certified by the American Heart Association. That’s because Thrive® is made from monounsaturated fat – a good fat that helps maintain heart health. Monounsaturated fat is also heat stable and ideal for high heat cooking, making Thrive® extremely versatile in the kitchen, whether you’re cooking, baking or whipping up a salad dressing.
The algae used to make Thrive® Algae Oil is not harvested from the ocean. Our algae originally came from the sap of a chestnut tree.
The ideal cooking oil is high in monounsaturated fat (omega-9), the good fat that is more heat stable, and low in polyunsaturated fat (omega-3 and omega-6), which breaks down into toxins at low to medium temperatures.
Thrive Algae Oil contains 90% monounsaturated fat and less than 2% polyunsaturated fat.
Since Thrive® Algae Oil has the highest level of monounsaturated fat of any cooking oil, it is more stable at high temperatures and the right choice for sautéing, stir frying, searing, roasting and grilling.
EPA and DHA are important and essential in a healthy diet. However, they should not be used in high-heat cooking since they breakdown and form toxic compounds.
Thrive® Algae Oil is high in monounsaturated fat, the good fat that is more stable at high heat, and contains no EPA or DHA, which makes it ideal for high-heat cooking and enables an extremely high smoke point.
We recommend Thrive® Algae Oil be enjoyed by the “freshest date” indicated on the bottle, which is 30-months from the point of bottling.
We recommend storing Thrive® Algae Oil as you would any other cooking oil: in a cool, dark place without exposure to sunlight.
We start with algae, one of nature’s first foods and a source of oil and good fats. We add plant traits from oil producing plants, like safflower and olive to our algae through the use of biotechnology. We add these plant traits to help make an even better oil that’s higher in monounsaturated fat and lower in saturated fat. The algae are grown in fermenters, just like the kind for making wine and beer, and naturally convert renewable plant sugars to oil in just a few days. We expeller press the oil from the algae. The result is an oil that does not contain GMOs. The leftover pressed algae can be used for renewable energy, for minimal waste.
Thrive® Culinary Algae Oil does not contain GMOs.
At this time, we are not pursuing organic certification.
There are no pesticides in Thrive® Algae Oil.
Thrive® Algae Oil is Kosher Certified through the Orthodox Union (OU). The entire process for any Kosher product must be performed in Kosher Certified facilities. Both our production and bottling facilities are Kosher Certified, making Thrive® Algae Oil 100% Kosher. Thrive® Algae Oil is not currently Halal Certified.
Thrive® Algae Oil is expeller pressed and refined in a process free from hexane, making it Paleo-friendly. Additionally, Thrive is high in monounsaturated fat (~90%) and low in polyunsaturated fats (less than 2% omega-3 and omega-6), which enable it to stay stable at high heat. It comes from algae, one of nature’s first foods and a source of oil and good fats. Many Paleo eaters have welcomed Thrive® Algae Oil into their diets!
As part of our mission to better the planet, we made sure to use packaging that is 100% recyclable.
